Law Society of Ontario Licensing Practice Exam

The term that accurately describes an individual who seeks legal services but has not yet retained a lawyer is "prospective client." This term specifically refers to a person who shows interest in obtaining legal representation and may be exploring their options, but has not yet entered into a formal agreement with a lawyer to provide those services.

Understanding the terminology is important for legal professionals. A "prospective client" is someone who may be in discussions regarding their legal needs and could potentially become a client, but until they sign a retainer agreement or formally engage the services of the lawyer, they remain in the prospective category.

The other terms do not precisely convey this stage of the attorney-client relationship. "Potential client" suggests a broader idea but lacks the specific connotation of actively seeking legal services. "Consultation client" implies a more defined interaction where the individual may have already sought a first meeting or consultation, but it does not cover those who have not engaged any legal services yet. "Engaged client" indicates a formal relationship where the individual has retained the lawyer's services, which contrasts with the state described in the question.
